When the update is available, Apple will send a notification to your phone. You can also check your Settings app to see if there’s a small red alert badge, telling you it’s time to update. Even if you don’t see the alert, you can manually force your device to update. Once you’ve downloaded the update, your phone will have to restart. This will mean a few minutes without servicesomething to keep in mind if you’re waiting on anything important.

1. Backup your data.

It’s good to make sure that all of your photos, tunes, settings, contacts, and more don’t go away along with your old operating system. You can backup via iTunes or iCloud.

Plug your device into its charger or into your computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. And connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi or open up iTunes.

2. Find the software update.

Tap on Settings > General > Software Update. Then click to Download and Install. If you’re plugged into iTunes, find your device. Then under Summary, click Check for Updates.

3. Clear space.

You may be prompted to clear space to make room for the update. Your phone will give you the option to temporarily delete apps and reinstall them after the update. Alternatively, you can make room by deleting files manually.

4. Schedule it for later.

If you really need your phone now, after the software update is downloaded, you can opt to install the software later. iPhones give the option to install overnight (just leave your device plugged into a charger before going to sleep) or to remind you later.
